our story
Josh Wechsler and Jen Young Mahlstedt - Founders and Co-Directors of The J² Method, are nationally respected educators, directors, and visionaries with a shared mission: to cultivate artists who are not only technically excellent but deeply empowered.
Over the course of 12 years, Jen and Josh created and led the Pre-Professional Company at ZACH Theatre, transforming it into one of the most celebrated youth training programs in the country. Under their leadership, the program achieved a 100% college acceptance rate for graduating seniors, with students going on to attend the top musical theatre and acting programs in the U.S.
Their alumni have gone on to star on Broadway, lead national tours, perform in regional theaters across the country. They have appeared in major TV shows, become directors, choreographers, recording artists and tv producers as well as thrive in creative careers beyond the stage and screen—in boardrooms, courtrooms, and classrooms, carrying with them the confidence, discipline, and expressive power nurtured under Jen and Josh’s guidance.
Jen, a dynamic choreographer and theatre educator, is known for her ability to craft powerful stories through movement and ensemble work inspiring students to become skillful young performers by blending rigorous technique with heart-centered teaching. Josh, a sought-after voice teacher, music director, and theatre educator, is known for his ability to unlock authentic vocal and dramatic expression through technical prowess - while nurturing confidence and craft in every student he teaches.
Together, they founded The J² Method to build something new: a training company rooted in rigorous technique, individualized mentorship, and the belief that great teaching unlocks not only talent—but transformation. The J² Method Studio is the capstone and unifier of the equation.
The J2M Studio is an audition-based training program for passionate, dedicated young artists. Structured like a professional conservatory, the Studio offers immersive, year-round training in singing, dancing, and acting—led by seasoned industry professionals, working performing artists, and Broadway performers. With a curriculum that balances technique, creativity, and discipline, students build a solid foundation across all three disciplines while developing advanced rehearsal strategies, performance techniques, and real-world audition skills essential for success both on stage and beyond.
